💛BORN FROM GOLD🌞

Morning tea with Kameya Shigehisa's (亀屋重久) cheerful 'yamabuki' (山吹) sweet.
The bright yellow flowers appear from the beginning of April.

Japanese kerria (ヤマブキ) once grew in such profusion in the grounds of Matsunoo-taisha that it was known as 'Yamabuki-no-sha' (山吹の社 the 'Shrine of Kerria Roses').

The rather odd genus name 'kerria' comes from William Kerr, who brought yamabuki to a wider audience.

@camelliakyoto I am just an amateur, and started to go deeper into the use of herbs and spices at old age. But experience the blessings of using it in moderation. Learning to bake bread with rye German/Scottish style. Discovered Swabischer Brotklee a few years ago. Only growing in the Austrian Alps as far as I know. Hard to buy that in Holland. I understand Japanese Kerria and Brotklee are from the same family ?

Around 3000 yamabuki bushes bloom from April to May along the banks of Matsunoo-taisha's Ichinoigawa (一ノ井川).

The canal was allegedly first excavated by the Hata clan (秦氏) with the founding of the shrine in 701.

There is a legend that yamabuki (山吹 'kerria rose') first appeared when a traveller dropped a purse of gold coins whilst racing through a valley.

The flowers represent 'luck with money', 'sublimity' and 'royalty'.

In times of old courtiers and courtesans would flock to the banks of the Tamagawa (玉川) in Ide (井手), south of Kyōto, to view the yamabuki.
It was an expensive excursion, giving birth to the phrase "scattering gold coins as the yamabuki scatters golden petals".

In Edo times 'yamabuki-iro' (山吹色) described the colour of gold (and bribery).

flowers bloom sevenfold and eightfold,
but the kerria laments,
for not a single fruit does it bear
七重八重花は咲けども山吹の実の一つだになきぞ悲しき

-Prince Kaneakira composed this famous poem after a stranger asked to borrow a raincoat during a storm.

Kyokado Toshiyasu's (京華堂利保 - the store is now closed) famed 'shigure-gasa' (しぐれ傘 'umbrella for a brief downpour')...a smooth, jelly-like bean paste is sandwiched between castella sponges. The cake is branded on top to look like an open umbrella, but when cut creates mini closed umbrellas.

In response the prince handed him a branch of yamabuki and bid him farewell.

The next day the stranger returned and asked why he had been given the flowering branch🫤
Kaneakira explained that just as the kerria rose (blooming in his garden) had no fruit, so he had no raincoats...

The poem is a play on words because 'mi(no)' (実の 'fruit') is a homonym for 'mino' (蓑 'straw raincoat').

Kaneakira's (兼明親王 914-87) verse was popularised by a similar incident involving the general Ōta Dōkan (太田道灌 1432-86), architect of Edo Castle (江戸城).

Caught in a shower whilst out hunting, Dōkan called at a shabby hut for a raincoat. A young girl appeared, apologised, and handed him a yamabuki branch. Perplexed and furious he stormed home in the rain.
