tux Thx to AI Linux will soon stop being a platform for retrocomputing hardware. Old hw support is getting deprecated to reduce the attack surface.

Meanwhile the Linux Foundation is creating its nth AI/crypto related group.

Rust is becoming a major part of the #Linux kernel. Even long time C veteran Greg Kroah Hartman (GKH) supports the shift. Rust is next big thing if you are into kernel or device drivers or other stuff where memory safety is essential for security reasons

A stage screen showing a presntation slide titled Greg's unscientific opinion. The text claims 80% of Linux CVEs would be impossible if the code was writen in Rust

Be kind to strangers, a MacBook reflection.

For a couple of months now, I've had a MacBook Air M4, and while macOS and me are never going to become best friends, I have to give it credit where it's due.

I got it primarily to run some proprietary software I want to use, and it replaced a Windows 11 system, which filled that niche before.

Since then, it has somehow become my daily driver, and here's how I think it happened.

  1. The hardware is amazing to use (while also being atrociously to repair, I guess). Silent, performant, and efficient. Apart from the occasional, excessive Slay the Spire session, I've never had to hunt for an outlet. My experiences with Linux laptops have been quite different.

  2. It's always there. I usually switch off the power at my desk when I'm done for the day. With the MacBook, the longest I have to wait to read mail or browse the web is for my monitor to switch on, while my Linux desktop needs to boot and makes noise.

  3. Homebrew feels package-managery enough for me to be comfortable. Most of the FOSS software I use day-to-day seems to be in there.

  4. Replacing Windows: I can use the system without an Apple ID. (How sad that that's noteworthy, and I wonder how much longer that'll work.)

I didn't think it would happen, but here we are.

For many years, I’ve been using Debian debian but installing Ubuntu ubuntu for others, fearing that Debian was too geek.

I spent hours "desenshitificating" Ubuntu.

After the Nth failed upgrade, I reconsidered.

Oh boy!

The Debian 13 GNOME live image is clean, polished, easy and perfect ! Install was a breeze, even with complex partitions. I only added a couple of gnome-shell extensions : dash2dock and desktop-icons.

Debian just works like I dreamed it should 25 years ago! Thanks Debian!

@ploum

How good is #Debian 13 #trixie for #blind users now? Esp. non-geeks? I need to install a PC for a #visuallyImpaired person and wonder, if I should go for #Gnome or something else?

The Arch Linux AUR had over 400 packages compromised with malware

Looks like the Arch Linux AUR (Arch User Repository) needs some better security and package checks - as some malicious users compromised a lot of packages.
