For many years, I’ve been using Debian debian but installing Ubuntu ubuntu for others, fearing that Debian was too geek.

I spent hours "desenshitificating" Ubuntu.

After the Nth failed upgrade, I reconsidered.

Oh boy!

The Debian 13 GNOME live image is clean, polished, easy and perfect ! Install was a breeze, even with complex partitions. I only added a couple of gnome-shell extensions : dash2dock and desktop-icons.

Debian just works like I dreamed it should 25 years ago! Thanks Debian!

@ploum Arch is my "just works" distro nowadays, for machines where I don't mind rebooting them every once in a while.

Has a rep of being very hardcore, but it's really mostly a meme. It's probably the most consistently stable distro I think I've ever run since you do rolling updates instead of big bang version migrations.

Like yeah you may need to tinker a bit, but it pales in comparison with the open heart rocket surgery you need to do when Ubuntu isn't working.

How good is #Debian 13 #trixie for #blind users now? Esp. non-geeks? I need to install a PC for a #visuallyImpaired person and wonder, if I should go for #Gnome or something else?

Yupp, I am not allowed to use NixOS at work, so I settled on a Debian + nix combo. Deb is clean and stable, and nix has all the fancy+reproducible things I need. <3

@ploum I aligned with you on #Ubuntu having all kind annoying things like Snap. I prefer #LinuxMint ship with Cinnamon, easy to migrate Windows users on it. I would say the difference of LinuxMint over #Debian is
* Ubuntu deb versions so much more up to date than Debian stable
* That's helping on the software/hardware compatibility ( compatible deb, and more recent kernel supported )
For a stable system and long support #Debian is amazing

@ploum while I agree, Debian imho misses a more user friendly release upgrade. This is the ingredient that makes Ubuntu and LMDE the better option for novice users. The official guide to dio this or Debian is still a command line nerd fest.

@ploum I've used Debian for approximately eight years and I've installed KDE+Debian on my relatives' computers but I've realised that it wasn't a smart choice because Debian doesn't offer rollbacks in case of failed updates/upgrades or (true) automatic updates/upgrades. You become the de facto admin of the computer because it requires an "expert" to install and to maintain. I have since moved on to Aurora for myself and my relatives and it's a hassle-free experience. You should give Aurora or Bluefin (if you prefer Gnome) a try some day.

@ploum You are spot on...But Ubuntu deserves kudos for pushing the Debian team into making it the distro it always should have been...and if Ubuntu will dump snaps and reintegrate with Debian, all will be perfect

After 15 years as a Ubuntu *user* I just installed Debian trixie - with some help from a pro - on a refurbished thinkpad. Amazing how easy configuration and GUI tweaking are.
Need some additional intelligence on installing non standard repository proggies like signal desktop, SDR++ brown & rtL-433 but thats it.
The next Debian machine I'll install alone.😎
